The Battle Worth Fighting

March 2020

The Battle Worth Fighting

laying flat
on the hard
cold steel table
waiting, waiting
facing the inevitable
technicians lining
your body in position
matching
the tattooed black dots
on the four corners
where danger
once existed
Watching, staring
fearing
alone
in the sterile room
oversized metal disks
rotate and roam
slowly breathing in
breathing out
just slightly
hold, hold, hold
the blue laser lines
penetrate your
naked breast
marked with
scars
of the battle
you continue
to fight

  1. "Watching, staring, fearing, alone in the sterile room"-the feelings of vulnerability are so powerfully conveyed in that stark phrasing-wow! A sterile room full of mechanical disks and lasers-so clinical and cold, is the battleground for helping a precious human life fight for its existence. The rhythmic breathing and tense feelings of waiting, on a cold steel table, as the machines do their work. A battle for survival, and the setting yields no comfort. Your words are chosen so carefully and so well. Wonderful job!

  2. Eva - thank you so much for sharing this. I knew where it was going before you revealed it when you said about lining up the dots - it brought me back to when my mom had a similar experience. This is really powerful and I love how clear and concise it is to explain such a profound happening. Very cool. Thanks again.
